Finance asks for a new discount type for one large wholesale customer, "just a small change to checkout". Your team is mid-quarter on other work. How do you respond?
Answer it out loud before you open anything. The value of the flags below is in comparing them to what you actually said.
The situation behind the question
The wholesale customer places large orders by email today and finance keys them in by hand. The requested discount is tiered by quantity and applies only to their account. Checkout already has percentage codes and free-shipping codes.
What it is really testing
Whether the candidate can say no — or "not like that" — in a way that keeps the relationship and still serves the underlying need. The trap is either saying yes to be helpful or saying no by pointing at the roadmap, when the real work is finding out what finance is trying to get done and whether there is a cheaper way to do it.
